 The answer is yes, but probably not for the reason you think. Most cooling sheets don't actively cool your body. Instead, they help your body do what it's already designed to do: release excess heat while you sleep.

Understanding that difference is the key to choosing bedding that actually works.   2. The weave — how the fabric is constructed
  3. The amount of insulation — how many layers surround your body
  4. Cooling technologies — specialized treatments or materials added to the fabric

Everything marketed as "cooling bedding" comes back to one or more of these four factors.

 

1. The Fiber

Different fibers handle heat and moisture differently. Some let heat escape easily; others trap warmth.

  • Linen — naturally breathable, highly absorbent, and quick-drying. One of the coolest natural bedding materials available.
  • Cotton percale — long-staple cotton woven into a percale weave creates crisp, breathable sheets that release heat and moisture exceptionally well. It's a reason many luxury hotels choose it.
  • TENCEL™ Lyocell — made from sustainably sourced wood pulp, known for excellent moisture management and a silky feel. A strong option for night sweats.
  • Bamboo-derived fabrics — often marketed as cooling, but performance varies widely. Most are regenerated cellulose fibers, and the final result depends as much on the manufacturing process as the original plant.

The takeaway: if you tend to sleep hot, choose breathable natural fibers like linen or cotton, or a high-quality plant-derived fiber like TENCEL™ Lyocell. Synthetic fabrics like polyester microfiber generally retain more heat and moisture, making them a less comfortable choice for most hot sleepers.

 

2. The Weave

Most people shop for sheets by fiber (cotton, linen, bamboo, TENCEL™) but the weave matters just as much. Think of it like knitting two sweaters from the same yarn: the material's identical, but how it's constructed changes how it feels. Two sets of 100% cotton sheets can sleep very differently depending on how the threads are woven together.

Percale uses a simple one-over, one-under weave that creates a light, crisp fabric with more space between the threads. That open construction lets heat and moisture escape more easily, making percale one of the coolest weaves available. That crisp, fresh feel you remember from a nice hotel bed was probably cotton percale.

Sateen uses a different pattern that creates a smoother, silkier surface. Because the threads are woven more tightly, sateen tends to trap more warmth than percale. Many people love its buttery-soft feel, especially in cooler climates, but if you naturally sleep hot, it's probably not your best choice.

For years we've been told a higher thread count means better sheets. That's only part of the story. Thread count can influence softness and durability, but it isn't a reliable indicator of how cool sheets feel. Extremely high thread counts often create a denser fabric with less airflow.

For breathable cotton percale, a moderate thread count (300–450) is usually the sweet spot. Rather than chasing the biggest number on the package, focus on the quality of the cotton and the weave itself. Sometimes less really is more.

 

3. Cooling Technologies: Do They Actually Work?

Not all cooling sheets rely on fabric alone. Some manufacturers add specialized technologies designed to improve thermal comfort. Some genuinely work. Others create a temporary sensation that doesn't last through the night. Here's what's worth knowing before you pay extra.

 

Phase Change Materials (PCM).

If you've ever touched a cooling blanket or pillow that felt noticeably cool the moment your hand landed on it, often with a slightly gel-like feel, that was likely PCM. It shows up most often in cooling blankets, comforters, mattress pads and protectors, premium pillows, and some higher-end sheet sets. This technology is one of the few cooling technologies backed by well-established textile science. Tiny microscopic capsules built into the fabric absorb excess body heat as you warm the material, store it, and gradually release it as they cool and reset for the next cycle

Is it worth it? Yes, with realistic expectations. PCM delivers a genuine cooling sensation, especially when you first get into bed or whenever the material's had time to cool between uses, but it isn't an endless source of cooling. Once it's absorbed all the heat it can store, the effect fades until it has a chance to recharge.

 

A Few Other Technologies Worth Noting:

  • Mineral-infused fabrics (graphite, ceramic, mica) don't actively cool you, but help spread heat more evenly across the surface, reducing hot spots. The effect is subtle and works best paired with breathable fabric.
  • Moisture-management treatments don't make sheets feel colder, they help you stay drier, which often reads as more comfortable.
  • Cool-to-the-touch finishes create an immediate cool sensation on contact that fades as the fabric warms to your body temperature. Not ineffective, just temporary.

 

Do these treatments wash out? Sometimes. Technologies like PCM are often built directly into the fiber or securely bonded, so they hold up through many wash cycles. Others are surface finishes that lose effectiveness over time. If longevity matters to you, check the care instructions rather than assuming all cooling technologies perform the same way.

 

Are they safe? For most consumers, yes. Look for OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certification, which means the finished product has been independently tested for a wide range of harmful substances.   

The Biggest Cooling Factor Most Brands Don't Talk About

Cooling technologies can help. The right fiber matters. The weave makes a difference. But there's one factor that's surprisingly powerful and consistently overlooked: how many layers are covering you.

Every layer of fabric is another layer of insulation; great in winter, working against you as a hot sleeper. A traditional duvet setup typically stacks:

  • A top sheet
  • The bottom side of the duvet cover
  • The duvet insert
  • The top side of the duvet cover
