You make the bed. Everything is smooth, tucked and behaving itself.
Then you wake up and one corner of the fitted sheet has escaped.
Again.
If your fitted sheet keeps popping off, sliding up the mattress or bunching underneath you, the answer might seem obvious: buy a deeper fitted sheet.
But deeper isn't necessarily better.
A fitted sheet that stays in place needs three things working together:
Depth + Tension + Grip.
Get those right, and your fitted sheet has a much better chance of staying where it belongs…even when you don't.
Why Does My Fitted Sheet Keep Coming Off?
Usually, something about the fit isn't quite right.
Your fitted sheet may come loose because:
- The pocket isn't deep enough for your mattress.
- A mattress topper has increased the total mattress depth.
- The elastic isn't strong enough to hold the sheet securely.
- The sheet is actually too loose.
- The elastic has stretched or weakened over time.
- You move around a lot while you sleep.
And sometimes several of these things are happening at once.
That's why simply buying the deepest fitted sheet you can find isn't always the answer.
Are Deeper Fitted Sheets Better?
Not necessarily.
This is one of the most common misconceptions about fitted sheets.
If a fitted sheet is too shallow, it can certainly pull up over the mattress corners. So adequate depth matters.
But imagine putting a very deep fitted sheet on a much shallower mattress. Now there's extra fabric with somewhere to go.
It can wrinkle. It can bunch. It can shift.
More fabric doesn't automatically mean a more secure fit.

What you're really looking for is enough depth to accommodate your mattress plus enough tension to pull the sheet snugly around it.
That's where the second part of the equation comes in.
What Keeps a Fitted Sheet Tight?
Tension.
A fitted sheet shouldn't simply cover the mattress. It needs to gently pull around it.
Think about the difference between putting on a fitted T-shirt and an oversized one. They may both technically fit, but they're not going to stay in the same place when you move.
Your fitted sheet has a similar job.

There needs to be enough stretch and tension in the construction to pull the fabric smoothly around the mattress rather than simply leaving extra fabric underneath it.
But even depth and tension aren't quite enough.
There's one more piece.
What Helps Keep a Fitted Sheet From Sliding?
Grip.
The elastic around the bottom edge of a fitted sheet helps anchor it underneath the mattress.
Strong elastic creates tension. Adding grip gives that elastic a little more help staying where you put it.
That's why we think about fitted-sheet fit as three things working together:
Depth + Tension + Grip
Depth gives the sheet enough room to fit your mattress.
Tension pulls the sheet snugly around it.
Grip helps keep it there as you move.
None of the three has to do all the work by itself.
And that's the point.
Why We Designed the Truuce Fitted Sheet Differently
When we designed the Truuce fitted sheet, we didn't want the answer to be simply making the pocket deeper.
We wanted to think about what actually helps a fitted sheet stay on a mattress.
So, we designed around all three parts of the equation. Introducing the Truuce fitted sheet.

1. Depth: A 5-Inch Stretch Band
The Truuce fitted sheet has a 5-inch stretch band around the perimeter.
That stretch gives the fitted sheet additional flexibility to accommodate different mattress depths while helping the sheet conform around the mattress.
Our queen and king fitted sheets are designed to fit mattresses up to 16 inches deep.
2. Tension: Stretch That Pulls the Sheet Snug
That same stretch band does more than add depth.
As it stretches around the mattress, it helps pull the sheeting fabric snugly around and underneath it.
Instead of relying on a lot of extra loose fabric to accommodate mattress depth, the stretch itself helps create the fit.
3. Grip: Rubber-Grip Elastic
Around the bottom edge, we use strong elastic with a rubber grip.
The elastic creates tension underneath the mattress while the rubber grip helps it hold its position.
Depth.
Tension.
Grip.
Three rather unglamorous details.
But if you've ever woken up lying directly on your mattress because your fitted sheet decided to leave during the night, they suddenly seem much more interesting.
What About Mattress Toppers?
Mattress toppers can be one reason a fitted sheet that used to fit suddenly doesn't.
When you add a topper, you're effectively making your mattress deeper.
So don't measure only the mattress itself. Consider the total depth of everything the fitted sheet needs to cover.
At the same time, resist the temptation to automatically choose the deepest pocket available.
You're still looking for the same combination:
enough depth + enough tension + enough grip.
Do Fitted Sheet Straps Work?
They can.
Sheet straps, suspenders and clips add tension underneath the mattress and can be helpful if a fitted sheet continually pulls off.

But they also add another piece to your bedding routine.
For some people, that's a perfectly good solution.
We wondered whether that tension could simply be designed into the fitted sheet itself.
I’ve tested fitted sheet straps myself, and while they can work, I didn’t find them particularly easy to use. Trying to stretch and clip them underneath a mattress resulted in more than one strap snapping back at me. The most secure way I found to attach all four corners was to actually flip the mattress over which rather defeats the purpose if you’re looking for an easier way to make the bed. Effective? Yes. Something I wanted to wrestle with every time I changed the sheets? No way!
What Is the Best Fitted Sheet for Restless Sleepers?
If you toss, turn, stretch or change positions throughout the night, look for a fitted sheet designed to stay secure while you move.
Pocket depth matters, but it isn't the whole story. A fitted sheet for a restless sleeper should have enough depth for the mattress, enough tension to keep the fabric snug, and strong elastic with enough grip to stay anchored underneath it.
Depth + Tension + Grip.
That's exactly what we designed into the Truuce fitted sheet.
The 5-inch stretch band adds flexibility while helping pull the sheet snugly around the mattress. Strong rubber-grip elastic around the bottom edge helps hold it in place as you move.
And because the Truuce fitted sheet is part of the Truuce Duvet & Sheet System, it also gives the flat sheet and duvet top a secure place to connect.
So, if you're a restless sleeper, you don't have to become a less restless sleeper.
Your bedding can simply do a better job of keeping up with you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my fitted sheet keep coming off?
The sheet may be too shallow for your mattress, but it can also be too loose or lack enough elastic tension to stay securely underneath the mattress. Mattress toppers can also change the total depth the sheet needs to accommodate.
Are deep-pocket fitted sheets better?
Deep-pocket sheets are helpful for deeper mattresses but deeper doesn't automatically mean more secure. A good fit depends on having the right combination of depth, tension and grip.
Can a fitted sheet be too deep?
Yes. If the pocket is considerably deeper than your mattress and the sheet doesn't have enough tension to compensate, excess fabric can bunch or shift instead of fitting snugly.
How do I measure my mattress for a fitted sheet?
Measure from the bottom of the mattress to its highest point and include any mattress topper that will sit underneath the fitted sheet.
Do fitted sheet straps keep sheets from coming off?
They can. Fitted sheet straps or suspenders add tension underneath the mattress and may help secure a loose fitted sheet. Another approach is choosing a fitted sheet designed with stretch, tension and secure elastic built into its construction.
What should I look for in a fitted sheet that stays on?
Look beyond pocket depth. Consider whether the fitted sheet has enough depth for your mattress, enough stretch or tension to create a snug fit, and strong elastic or grip around the bottom edge to keep it secure.
What is the best fitted sheet for restless sleepers?
Look for a fitted sheet that combines adequate mattress depth with tension and strong elastic that helps keep it securely in place as you move. The Truuce fitted sheet was designed around this combination, using a 5-inch stretch band and rubber-grip elastic to create depth + tension + grip.
How is the Truuce fitted sheet different?
The Truuce fitted sheet uses a 5-inch stretch band around the perimeter to provide additional depth and tension, along with strong rubber-grip elastic around the bottom edge to help keep the sheet secure.
It's our approach to Depth + Tension + Grip.
Because a fitted sheet should do something fairly basic:
Stay fitted.
At Truuce, we feel that shouldn't be too much to ask of a fitted sheet.
